Location
I took this photo on the edge of the city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Alongside the river Rotte are several mills just waiting to be photographed.Time
I was going for a nice bikeride after work, and I was still biking at sunset when I came across this mill.Lighting
The light in this photo is all natural, it was pretty amazing golden light.Equipment
I took this photo with a Canon 450D and its kitlens, the 18-55mm IS II F/3.5-5.6. The camera was on a Cullmann tripod.Inspiration
I drove by and realized that this was such a typical Dutch scene that I just had to make this photo. I stood on the same spot until the sun was set, remained there for the blue hour and went back home when it was dark and chilly. The blue hour was kind of a dissapointment, but it didn't matter since I got a load of awesome shots.Editing
I had to highlight the mill, the house and the grass on the other side of the river, since they were quite dark. At first I tried HDR with 3-5 photo's, but in the end I just used one and used color burn to lighten all necessary spots. In my camera bag
I am a typical low-budget photographer. I usually take all my gear with me, simply because I don't have that much stuff. First of all, I bring my Canon 450D with it's kitlens, the 18-55mm IS II F/3.5-5.6. I use this lens a lot for land- and cityscapes. The Canon 70-300mm F/4.0-5.6 iS USM is always in my bag as well as the niftyfifty, the 50mm F/1.8 II. I don't use the 50mm very often, but since the weight is neglectable I just keep it in my bag. I have several filters, first of all a polarisation filter from Hoya, and a complete set of color- grey- and graduated filters which are compatibel with Cokin filters from some very cheap asian brand. I bought it to see whether I liked to use them, and now I am saving up some money to buy good quality filters. I always carry a headlight around, since I venture out in the evenings a lot. Making sure you have all your stuff in your bag when you leave is so much easier with a good light.Feedback
In the Netherlands it is quite easy to spot a typical Dutch scene, just by biking or driving on small roads. The hard part is to make a nice composition, since it is often not possible to get very far off the road due to inaccessible private lands. But when you find a nice spot, just wait untill the light is right and you will almost certainly get a nice photo.
