Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Banff National Park in Alberta. It was my first visit into the Rocky Mountains and I was impressed by the scenery. Mt. Rundle with Vermillion Lake in the foreground.

Time

It was a sunrise and in order to catch the sunrise, I left my hotel in Lake Louise by 6AM to drive to this location in Banff as recommended to me by fellow photographers. The sunrise was simply stunning; this photo was taken at 7:56 AM

Lighting

I wanted the foreground and especially the rock to show as much detail, so I used a neutral density filter to bring out the texture. The rock was an important balancing point for Mt. Rundle on the right of the image.

Equipment

I shot this photo with a Nikon D7100; 18mm lens 1 sec @f20 on a tripod and using a neutral density filter

Inspiration

The early morning sunrises always inspire me and this particular morning was extremely lucky. We started to get a bit of color in the sky about7:45AM but as we waited, the sky became much more inense in color. I just kept shooting away but liked this shot because of the texture of the rock as well as the sunrise and the intense reflection in the water.

Editing

I had used the neutral density filter. This is one shot not a composite. I shoot in raw, so only tweaked it a little bit to get a bit more detail out of the rock, and for sharpness but the intensity of the sky is the way it was. No processing needed there.

In my camera bag

Seeing that I was traveling and needed to go relatively light,I have my Nikon 7100, a 18-300mm Nikon lens, a 105mm Nikon macro, my 11-16mm Tokina, 50mm f1.4 Nion lens, neutral density filters, wireless shutter release, assorted cleaning cloths

Feedback

When it comes to shooting fantastic sunrises the hardest thing is to get out of a warm bed early enough to get to a pre-determined location. I either scout out an area and if I'm travelling, I try to connect with local photographers or anyone locally who knows the area for possible locations. I then scout out the location the day before so I know exactly where I am going and be on location well before sunrise. Some days you just luck out more than others as I did with this shot.
