Location
This photo was taken at the Marakele National Park, in South Africa, a few years ago. Our game drive vehicle stopped for us after spotting this group and we lay on the ground with our camera for an ants view, as a group of majestic giraffes gave us a curious stare and passed us by.Time
We were game driving in the morning, just before morning cuppa time when this opportunity presented itself. The conditions were quite warm with some clouds lingering on the Waterberg Mountains in the distance.Lighting
In this position we had no ability to control the lighting or angle other than trying to check the histogram to try not to blow out the sky.Equipment
This was actually shot on a borrowed camera and lens (70-300 I think) and a NikonD4, I am usually a Canon user so this was an added challenge to overcome, but I had an issue with the long lens I had rented for the trip. I was very grateful for the lend from a fellow photographer, so as not to miss this amazing moment.Inspiration
The wildlife in Africa inspires me everytime I visit (4 times now). I remember the first time I saw giraffes in the wild, I was blown away by their size but grace and gentleness. To be in their territory low to the ground with them giving us a curious glance as the went about thei day, was a special moment.Editing
Very little processing was done other than a black and white conversion and some contrast and dodge and burn in the sky. It was pretty much as shot.In my camera bag
Usually I have my Canon 5Dmark 3 with wide to long lenses. I have recently added a 100-400 lens which I have been using on a wave project I am working on while on a 7 month Australian roadtrip, which I then hope to take back to Africa again very soon.Feedback
This was really a right place, right time moment. Getting yourself on an African photographic safari is the best place to start. I can certainly recommend one if anyone is interested!
