Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on holiday in Bintam, Indoniasia along a stretch of beach whilst walking with my daughter. She was playing in the sand trying to dry off her wet hair in the sunshine. The beauty and frustration of photography is that a moment like this can happen at anytime. I was very lucky in being in the right place at the right time.

Time

Around midday. The light wasn't fantastic as the cloud cover was quite heavy with intermittent bouts of strong sunshine.

Lighting

Although the cloud cover was heavy, the light that was available was enough to produce some interesting shadows and reflections. It was interesting because the light had an almost 'metallic' quality to it. It's difficult to describe and the only time I have ever experienced something similar was when I was fortunate enough to witness a solar eclipse some years back.

Equipment

An iphone 4s I'm afraid. No expensive bodies or lens.

Inspiration

It was my daughter swinging her hair around to dry it in the midday sun that caught my eye. I also liked the rock formation we had passed earlier you see in the background. Together with the dramatic sky, mercury coloured sea, I hurried to capture the moment. With this in mind I managed to stop and kneel down. Seeing me doing this, she looked straight at me, arched her back and with a nonchalant flick of her head flicked her hair once again. Because her hair was wet, the whole movement took on a surreal slow motion quality. I wanted her to perform the same action again. Would she… absolutely not! Lesson learned, always be ready.

Editing

The original photograph was shot in colour and then converted to greyscale. In a sense it's a stronger shot as the monotone nature of the lighting was in stark contrast to my daughters neon pink coloured swim suit and her wet blonde hair.

In my camera bag

iPhone and mints.

Life is so unpredictable, be ready, always!
