Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken up in the Massif Muntele Mic (Little Mountain), Caras-Severin, Romania. I am a sport photographer and I was there to take some winter sports shots.Time
I remember it was the last call for the chairlift to transport us down to the base of the mountain. This was taken on January 12, 2013 at 3:18 PM.Lighting
On the moving chairlift I had no other option but the natural light, even if the light was harsh o that time of day.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D90, with an 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Sigma lens. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
I was on the moving chairlift, "hunting" for some landscapes to close a very demanding day. A white sea of snow was strewing below us and I was looking for something looking as waves when I saw a winding trail. In the next second my lens was searching for the brave man living that trail behind and I had time to take only two shots.Editing
I usually try to avoid to much post-processing. In this case it was only a small crop, brightness compensation on the person and I applied a high pass filter on the trail. In my camera bag
I always have in my bag the Nikon D90 camera, Sigma 70-300 mm and Nikkor 18-105 mm lenses, a polarizing filter and a lens cleaning kit. If I will shot for example a bike contest in dark forests I have also the Nissin Di622 Mark II flash and a tripod.Feedback
The Massif Little Mountain is fascinating. The weather can change radically from hour to hour and in the morning you can be over the clouds and then in no time you will find yourself in the middle of the fog. If you go the for winter sports photography there's no way you can ignore the landscape and you will find yourself waiting for the right light for landscape photography. On sunset the colors are amazing, but you will have to find your settings very quick, because the golden light will last for a small amount of time.
