Awesome photo. I love how it leads your eye in and the difference in scenery.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a family walk in the Yorkshire dales, in England. I am still only 14 years old so family walks are a frequent activity for me.

Time

Me, my Sister and my Dad (the one in the photo) set off from our house at about 11 in the morning I think, this is a walk that we don't do often but that day was a particularly beautiful one. This photo was taken towards the end of our walk, about 3:30 in the afternoon whilst we were waiting for the sunset. I think it was December at the time so the sunsets were pretty early. My intention in bringing my camera was to get a nice sunset shot of the Yorkshire dales, however, the sun didn't want to put on a spectacular show for us that day, but what I got out of it was this shot of my Dad on the hills.

Lighting

The lighting on the scenery was very nice at that time. From where I was standing the low sunlight was really bringing out the shape in the landscape.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon d7100 with a 35mm F1. 8g lens. At times on the walk, it would have been nice to have a wider lens but for this shot, it was perfect. The 35mm and the 85mm F1. 8g are the only two lenses I own but they are perfect for me, my favourite two kinds of photography are street photography and portraiture, hence the lens choices.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo really just presented itself too me; I was walking in a different place to my family and when I turned around to see where they were, this scene made me instantly want to take a picture.

Editing

I used light room 5 to do my post processing, which was really very simple; all I did was adjust the whites and the blacks and added a little bit of contrast for I was shooting raw, but apart from that, I didn't do much else. Sometimes when you have taken a decent picture, too much post processing can ruin it.

In my camera bag

As I have have said, the 35mm and the 85mm F1. 8g from Nikon are the only lenses I have, and I chose them for a purpose, they fit perfectly into the kinds of photography I like to do which are portraiture and street. The 85mm is beautifully sharp and has no distortion at all and the 35mm is a great focal length for street photography. I also use my 35mm as a great all rounder; for family, abstract and as you can see here, landscapes. I love my kit, it does exactly what I want it to do and I am happy with it.

Feedback

If you are wanting to capture something similar to this then you should obviously take someone with you to photograph and make sure you pick the right time of day, the time of day and the weather is so important if you are trying to capture a cirtain kind of mood in your photograph. Obviously I am not the most expirienced of landscape photographers but if I had to give you some tips, those would be it. Thanks for listening to me. :) Happy snapping!
