Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in front of a window in my living room. One of my sons surprised us by coming home for the holiday break with a new puppy.

Time

This shot was captured around noon. The time my teenage boys normally wake up. ????

Lighting

I took this using natural window light hoping that the midday light would brighten up the pups goofy expression and keep the attention on her and not the surroundings.

Equipment

This was shot with natural light on my Nikon D600 and a 35mm lens.

Inspiration

When my son came home with his new pup she was excited by everything. We are a family of 10 so she wanted to inspect everyone and I wanted to capture her face while she was inspecting us all.

Editing

I usually am a minimalist in the post processing area. I flipped the image to black and white and deepened the shadows to keep the focus on her face.

In my camera bag

I am excited to say that I just purchased my first camera upgrade and I shoot with the Nikon D5 and because I really love the documentary approach my 24mm or 35mm is almost always on my camera. I love being able to capture a whole scene just as much as I love capturing a feeling or emotion.

Feedback

With learning to shoot in a documentary style, my number one piece of advice is to shoot your scene from various angles while capturing the details. Get caught standing on a chair to take that shot or laying on the sidewalk to change up the perspective. My second piece of advice for this style of shooting is to always have your camera with you. At home, my camera stays on the kitchen counter so I can pick it up at any moment and capture something that one of my 8 kiddos is doing. You are more likely to use it if you can see it - so get in the habit of having it out and charged!
