Location
This photo was taken on a leaf and a branch of a lime tree in my backyard in The Bahamas. The yard has many large trees and at this time of the year, summer, the leaves are a rich green and provide a wonderful canvas for the butterfly and the branch.Time
This photo was taken in the late afternoon. The sun was in the west and the sun would to set in about three hours.Lighting
I wanted focus on the beauty of the butterfly, and I wished an angle of the butterfly from below as opposed to the side. I therefore made the shot above me, using the dappled light from the trees and the soft light from the afternoon sky.Equipment
This shot was taken with the Nikon d300 camera and the Nikon 70-200 mm f2.8 lens. I used a tripod.Inspiration
My backyard in summer time is a wonderful and lively place. Birds, insects, bugs, dogs, cats, babies - all enjoy the weather. And wonderful plants and flowers are blooming! I seek to record all the happenings of the backyard during this exciting time.Editing
I tend to keep my processing to a minimum and try to have the exposure and white balance adjusted before shooting. I may have used Picassa, a software found online. In my camera bag
My bag has Nikon cameras - d300 and d750; Nikon lens - 70-200mm f2.8, 16-35mm f4, 50mm f1.8, 85mm f2.8; and Manfrotto tripod.Feedback
I advise that the photographer - use settings that allow the subject to be isolated; shoot in the evening when the butterfly is getting ready for the evening rest; use the light source from the surrounding where possible; pre-focus; and exercise patience and be prepared to sit and wait - the subject will eventually come to you.
