Behind The Lens

Location

This image was recorded at Christmas time, shortly after we 'adopted' Krissy as a retired working dog. She loves the snow and just wanted to run and play. I had difficulty getting her to sit still for any length of time but in this instant I managed to fire of a few shoots to capture her expression. Taken near my home in the West Midlands.

Time

I think it was early morning, whilst everyone else was still in bed!

Lighting

Using available light, bracketing exposures. A brown and white dog on a white background can play havoc with metering!

Equipment

Nikon DSLR, standard 18-70mm kit lens, hand held.

Inspiration

I had seen an image on another website called 'Black Labrador' which was composed in a similar way, with great attention to exposure and composition.

Editing

Photoshop CS5 - Moderate 'fill' in the shadows, usual shift in contrast and sharpening.

In my camera bag

2 x Nikon DSLRs (D200/D90) Nikon 17-80mm lens; Sigma 10-20mm wide angle; Nikon 55-200MM zoom, Fuifilm XF1 compact camera, black plastic bin liner to kneel on or as waterproof liner for kit bag, (plain carrier bag always comes in useful for kneeling on, covering equipment in poor weather, carrying spare kit, changing lenses on the ground etc) spare batteries for cameras, spare memory cards, Cokin filters (ND, various grad ND's, Circular polarizer), Manfrotto monopod, Manfrotto lightweight tripod, homemade bean bags, 3 x lens cloths. SB800 flashgun with extension cord, and home made dish reflector for macro outdoors.

Feedback

Perseverance and anticipation. Take loads of shots and have treats available to hold the dog's attention! Standard advice is always focus on the eyes, and a decently small aperture will pull in the detail on the nose and ears.
