Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just outside of St. Thomas, ON, Canada on one of the farming roads just outside of the city. I was in the city for business and went exploring each evening. Photography was a new hobby for me so exploring for pictures outside was a much better option than spending my evenings in a hotel room.

Time

I took this early in the evening in the summer of 2013. There was still a few hours to go before sunset. Perhaps waiting until the golden hour may have been more ideal but there is a part of me that loves the play of a bright blue sky above a farmer's field with the yellows and greens of the grass.

Lighting

As mentioned, waiting a few more hours would have brought in more of the golden hour colors in the sky but as I drove past the field with the cut grass laying there I knew I had to get a photograph then and there. I think the shadows from the sun side lighting the piles of grass add to picture.

Equipment

I had just recently purchased a Fujifilm X10 simply for the reason of it being a small compact camera that would be easier to travel with versus dragging my dSLR with me on business. I stopped the car and laid the camera against the open car window to provide a little more stability.

Inspiration

Simply driving down a dirt road and the lines of the cut grass caught my eye. The undulations of the field and the grass just go together so well that my foot was suddenly slamming on the brakes.

Editing

I took several shots from varying angles. I decided on this angle and bracketed three shots with the thoughts of processing it using HDR techniques. I had taken an interest in doing HDR recently so I processed it using Nik HDR Efex. Looking back, a simple processing using Lightroom would've worked but I was still learning about HDR and the Nik software and photography in general so I processed it with that more as a learning exercise then what my usual workflow would be.

In my camera bag

At the time I had a Fujifilm X10 and a Nikon d5100 with the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses. I've recently started to invest more the Fuji equipment and now have a Fujifilm XT100 and the Fujifilm XT-1 with the Fuji XF 55-200mm, 35mm f2 lenses to go along with a Rokinon 12mm f2 and a Tamron 90mm macro lens (with adaptor to attach to Fuji mount - was purchased for Nikon)

Feedback

My advice is to just get out there and go down the dirt roads. I was just out there making random turns at intersections and looking for something interesting. The road less traveled so to speak!
