The lighting is always very poor in this venue …it's quite dark with only the standard (low budget) band lights. More often than not the musicians move in and out of the light so it's a fun challenge to capture the artist. I take quite a few photos to compensate and constantly time my shot to the rythme of the music.Equipment

I am passionate about music and strive to take rich moody shots.Editing
I haven't really set up a good editing program yet. However I'm pretty sure I tweaked the levels a bit.In my camera bag
Just upgraded the Sigma to a Nikon 2.8 70 -200. I generally take that lens to shoot musicians in club settings. I have the D600. I have just purchased a D810 which I'm very excited about. Other lenses Nikon 70 - 200 2.8 and the NIKON105 2.8 for portraiture. I always make sure I carry a backup battery and extra card because…ha,ha,ha, well you know.Feedback
Admittedly I'm not a technically astute photographer yet, so passing on tech advise is not in my comfort zone, however, the clubs and cafe's are always dark, so having a camera like the Nikon D600/D610 D800/D810 and a fast lens is an enormous help. I think it's important to immerse yourself in the music when you are shooting musicians. I know this sounds obvious but it is amazing what you can capture when you are familiar with a piece and can anticipate the movement of the artist. Quite often I will lock in a position for a minute or two if I anticipate there will be great potential in an up and coming emotion or gesture…. Think of the expression "Wait for it". I always take lots of shots in succession of each other to ensure I catch an expression or pose that I desire. If you are not familar with the artists work then meet the artist through your lens and their musical conversation. It will be wonderful…I promise. Cheers!
