I took this shot in Guatemala. You see the citylights of the beautiful village Antigua in the background. Antigua Itself is already worth a visit but the two volcanoes next to it give it that special vibe. My tent is at the inactive volcano Acatenango while the Lightshow in the back is the highly active Fuego. in case you don't know - Fuego is spanish for fire and i think they chose this name wisely.Time
It was definitively sleeping time! I hiked up that steep volcano the whole day with all that Camping and Photography Gear in my 70L Backpack. The view was awesome but that loose stones all the way up weren't fun. Two steps forward, one step back. When we finally made it to the Camping Spot I wanted to go for the summit the same night so I hiked up another hour with my camera equipment to get an awesome shot from the top. But sadly I wasnt lucky and the volcano stayed silent. Half way back I started to get bad, bad headache and was totally ready for my sleeping back. But all of a sudden the Fuego started to making some noises and spitted lava all over the place. It was like he was holding his breath the last hours to let it out now. I was immediately ready and starting shooting as long as the show went on even my Head was throb like hell.Lighting
If you look closely you can see that the light source is not coming from my direction but a few meters next to me. It was another hiker that walked there with his flashlight on and normally I would have told him he should turn it off for a second but I was feeling so sick I don't even wanted to move my mouth. As soon as the Image appeared on my Display I knew that lighting up the tent and the foreground was very important for that shot.Equipment
I used a Canon 60D, a Tamron 17-50 Lens and a Sirui T-1204X.Inspiration
Of course I knew I will take some photos on this hike but to be honest I did not planned this shot. We build the tent with a good view to the Fuego and it was likely that there will be an explosion but I had not framed that shot in my mind before it happened. I guess you can feel the adventures and spontaneous vibe that is going on in this photo.Editing
This Photo went through regular RAW processing but no fancy things. In my camera bag
I am a big fan of Tamron Lenses because I really think they got an awesome price/quality ratio. I prefer wide or ultra wide lenses so I mainly use the Tamron 17-50 on the Canon 60D and the Tamron 15-30 on the Sony Alpha 7.Feedback
You will not be able to reproduce this exact shot! Not because I am the king of the hill but because the Fuego looks different now. A few weeks after I did that shot he really freaked out and blew away his head. But of course you can still get nice shots there. You can get guided tours or rent camping equipment in Antigua. Take enough water with you because its getting hot up there!
