Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my hometown, Varese, a city in the north of Italy, near Milan

Time

I was walking in the afternoon, through the waves of people of a tipical shopping-saturday in my hometown. My city it's usually full of people walking fast and busy so this "quiet moment" stood out particularly throught the chaos. I had to knee and take this photo.

Lighting

I made this shot ona sunny day but fortunately, the architecture around my subject created some shadows and dark zone

Equipment

I used a Fujifilm X100, with its fixed 23mm (35mm equivalent)...and obviously, my feet, used to "zoom"

Inspiration

I loved the contrast between the two men, at the opposite of the bench, one dressed in dark and the other with light coloured...like if they're angry...maybe something happened between the two...i love when i can guess a story from a photo or a moment.. Then, the man at the right that was going away and i luckily managed to capture his foot raising from the floor.

Editing

Obviously i converted the picture from color to monochrome...but the picture was already black and white in my mind. I raised the contrast and the sharpness a bit...i always shoot RAW as flat as possible in camera, and i edit picture on Lightroom when i use digital.

In my camera bag

Now i'm using a Fujifilm X-E2 with some lenses. For street i use the 27mm, when i do some flash street photography i prefer using the 10-24 instead, with an off-camera flash. Sometimes i love using some legacy lenses, expecially my Zenit Helios 44-2. Then, i have a Canon AE-1, Canon MC10, Olympus XA4 and Olympus 35SP...i use all of them depending on my feelings...but i carry just two cameras at a time.

Feedback

Anticipate the moment, you have to understand what is going to happen in the next seconds and then shoot at the right time. If you're too slow, then the moment is gone. Then, prepare your camera to be as fast as your eyes, don't rely too much on autofocus and learn how to be in the scene and not standing outside.
