I took this shot when I was in Moscow, right besides the Kremlin. I was looking for a picture which would, for me, capture the essence of that place, yet would not be that obvious at first glance. I was lucky enough to catch this lighting!Time
Afternoon - near twilight time. I always try to capture the golden hour whenever I go, and it so happened that I shot this at I later understood to be the perfect conditions for my taste. Most of the time, this kind of weather and lighting do not present themselves at the best moment, and lightroom helps me retrieve what I saw at the scene. This day, however, was perfect.Lighting
Using the best hours of the day can really improve photography. I find that early in the morning, when the sacrifice is made to get up really early out of the comfy bed, and in the golden hour/twilight time some of the best shots come around and completely change any scene for the better.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100, and I think the 18-55mm (or otherwise the 55-200mm) lens. I also used a surface as a tripod, as mine had not yet arrived.Inspiration
I was thinking about my mother, who passed away when I was 6. She was young, full of life, a sweetheart and just an inspiration for not only me and my father, but everyone that met her. I was thinking about our times together, as a trip to Moscow was the last thing we did as a family. I thought that at that moment that this was one of the most beautiful views I've seen. I had to capture it, so that I could remember.Editing
I retouched just a little, making sure that everything was right. In my camera bag
I usually travel with my tripod (and monopod, which is screwed in the tripod itself), camera (the Nikon D7100), lenses (the ones appropriate for that particular trip, be it the 18-55mm, the 55-200mm, the 75-300mm or the telelens), spare batteries, spare SD memory cards (to shoot raw), a covering hood (so that in case of snow or rain my camera does not get damaged) and filters.Feedback
If it's this kind of light you're after, try being on the selected spot some time before sunset, and when those colours and lights begin to show themselves, capture as many pictures as you can. You can select the ones you like later, and this way you do not waste the precious limited time which is available. If trying to capture the city, movement and calm at the same time, try spotting a place which is rich in human made structures such as buildings or boats. By this time of day, depending on where you are, there is a possibility of capturing an image which does not include people directly, yet implies their existance.
