I took this photo in my living room in front of the window.Time
This photo was taken around 10 am.Lighting
My goal was a dreamy silhouette (and this was honestly my first attempt at silhouettes at all...) My window is east facing and the sun at 10 am was bright, brutal and shooting straight through the window. so I pinned a piece of thin fabric across the window to block out some of that light.Equipment
My camera at the time was a Canon Rebel T1i using a kit lens.Inspiration
My inspiration for this photo was actually another that I saw on Pinterest. I honestly don't remember the photographers name... but she did a lifestyle session with her sister (or sister-in-law) and one shot was her sister sitting on a bed, backlit, and partially silhouetted.Editing
Yes I did some amateur post-processing on this photo. I had only started with Photoshop elements and had no idea how to use masks yet. I used levels to deepen my shadows. I topped it off with a gradient mask to add the color and adjust the lighting a bit more.In my camera bag
Now, the equipment that is always with me is: Camera- Canon Mark III Lenses- 70-200mm, 50mm, and 24-105mm (soon to be replaced with either a 35mm or 24-70mm) Canon speedlight At least 2 extra memory card and batteries, lens pen, and white balance card.Feedback
My advice for other photographers is to learn exposure and learn to run your camera in manual; Auto mode is holding you back! Like I said earlier, this was my first (uneducated) attempt at silhouettes and it was all guess work. Looking back, if I wanted to reproduce this image now, I now know to both diffuse my light and keep my subject close to my light source to soften the shadows (or in this case, the edge of the shadows). And I know how to manually adjust my camera to get the exposure I want vs hoping and praying my camera can get it right by dialing down by exposure meter.
