First and foremost I think it is imperative to understand the tool in your hands. The cameras today have a lot of functions and settings that allow for optimal photographs to be taken. Learning as much as you can about your camera is imperative to capturing the best shots. I would also recommend always taking note of the light source when taking any photograph, making sure you're not casting a shadow on the subject which is common in a lot of Macro shots from standing so close to the subject.
