This is a composite of two photos. My son and the angel wings were taken in Mexico City in January of 2013. You can see more images of people in front of that statue here: http://www.alasdelaciudad.com/index.php/fotos/alas-de-la-ciudad/alas-de-chapultepec-285 and you will see that the wings are suspended by steel beams and the whole statue is on a busy boulevard. The background is a photo just before sunset on top of Haleakala on the island of Maui in Hawaii in June 2013.Time
Mid day for angel wings, sunset for background.Lighting
It was a spectacular sunset and made many more composites with different backgrounds from that same day.Equipment
Nikon D700 most likely, would have to look up. Undoubtedly different lenses for each photo.Inspiration
As I was driving around Mexico City on an overview tour, I saw this stature and immediately knew I wanted to take a picture of my son here with his ever present black hoodie. What sprang to mind was the poster photo Warren Beatty in Heaven can Wait but with a twist.Editing
Composite. This was really my first attempt to do one but my initial reaction to the photo was disappointment. With the busy background of cars, trees, street vendors it did not have the impact I wanted. So I googled how to remove the background and laboriously did so. Then I started looking for backgrounds to try and started looking at iStockphoto and places like that. However I remembered that I had taken photos of the sky from time to time so I found a nice blue sky, pink and white clouds and put it behind this. Very nice. And THEN I remembered the dramatic skies from the Hawaii trip. I've tried several that I like very much, this is one of my favorites. In my camera bag
Nikon D700 and D7000, Tamron 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. Also have a Sony NEX7 with an 18-200 lens. On the trip to Mexico I bought an inexpensive 80-300 lens so I wouldn't worry about losing it. Plus, more zoom.Feedback
If you have a flash of inspiration, make sure you do get the photo. My first photo in this location was a dud because my husband didn't like my son always wearing his hoodie so he insisted he leave it at home. I was very disappointed by that photo. The next time we came by the neighborhood I insisted my son DO bring the hoodie and with just a few moments to take the photo (long line of people waiting to take their own), I quickly got him up there and directed him to put his head down and look up and then took a couple of shots.
