I captured this photo of the monarch, a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, outside of my office building one day at lunch! I am a Florida native, and have always loved our natural wildlife. People think Florida is all swamp and alligators, but this is far from the truth! We have native animals, such as opossums, manatees, fox squirrels, raccoons, white-tailed deer, key deer and armadillos are among the more commonly seen mammals.Time
It was early afternoon, in Ft. Lauderdale, which happens to be the hottest part of the day! The front driveway has these blooming flowers (Asclepias, a form of milkweed) that the butterflies love to gather around.Lighting
It was captured in nature afternoon full sun.Equipment
I happened to have my little blue Canon PowerShot ELPH115 IS in my purse! No tripod, just point and shoot!Inspiration
I love the story of the migration of these butterflies, and how their population is being tracked by scientists at National Geographic right now. I thought that I could document their arrival to South Florida!Editing
No post processing. Most of my pictures are left as naturally taken. I believe in doing the work when taking the shot!In my camera bag
I carry an extra SD card and use a very simple Nikon CoolPix L330 . I also have a Canon PowerShot ELPH115 IS on hand in case I go to an event which limits or restricts usage of bigger cameras. This allows me to be efficient, spontaneous and captures the best shots.Feedback
Always be ready to grab your camera or even phone, and be aware of your surroundings. You can anticipate shots the more you take them. The more you take, the better your chances of capturing that one photo that makes you pause and say, "Awesome Shot!"
