Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photograph in my spare room, facing a big open window.

Time

It was the afternoon, on a very grey day. Perfect time to experiment putting on make up and taking pictures indoors.

Lighting

I simply used window light, in a room with white walls so the light bounced. For the bokeh, I used small LED lights as a separate frame.

Equipment

Canon 5D, 50mm 1.8, Tripod, Shutter Remote, LED lights and myself as the model.

Inspiration

When I'm bored I tend to either, practice my make-up because I'm pretty terrible at it, or take random pictures around the house. This was one of those shots born of complete boredom, wanting to try something new. It started a whole streak of creative self portraits.

Editing

I lightened and enhanced the colours in Photoshop, then edited and merged the LED lights layer, as well as adding texture, then used a layer mask to reveal my face.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D mk II, Canon 5D, Canon 20D, 50mm 1.4, 24-70mm 2.8, Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, Shutter remotes and two Speedlites.

Feedback

Just get really experimental in a corner of your own house. You don't need a lot of room or a lot of props to create something really cool.
