Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo at beautiful Lady Bird Lake in Austin Texas. I love capturing images of birds. I especially love the combination of birds and water. To some, herons are almost too common to photograph. To me, this heron is spectacular--I must have taken 15 pictures of it!Time
I took this and many other photos of the lake and landscape sometime during the early afternoon on a very warm sunshiny day.Lighting
The day was bright. The bird stayed close to the tall grasses a bit in the shadows. I like how the sun lit up the greens, and how the stark whiteness of the heron contrasts with the darkness of the water.Equipment
I shot this with my little Samsung Galaxy Camera.Inspiration
Animals in nature, particularly birds inspire me. I love to watch them, to photograph them and to listen to them. Its easy for low-skilled amateurs like me to get a great shots of herons--they cooperate by striking a graceful pose and then holding it for a long time.Editing

I am un-taught, so take this advice with a big grain of salt. When setting out to photograph birds and other animals in natural settings, think of the photo as a bonus. The real prize is sighting the animal with your very own eyes doing what it does as a free creature. Watch and listen. When you shoot, shoot a lot.
