Late May is breeding time at the Click Ponds of the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands for the Black-necked Stilt. The ponds are alive with the sounds of these birds defending their territories while they forage the shallow water. An overcast afternoon provided a perfect opportunity to capture these unique and beautiful birds. This little guy was determined to stand his ground as I moved closer to photograph him.
Black-necked Stilts (Himantopus mexicanus): A striking black-and-white bird with very long, thin red legs, the Black-necked Stilt is found along the edges of shallow water in open country. They have the second-longest legs in proportion to their bodies of any bird, exceeded only by flamingos.
