Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture at Sowerby, Halifax, in the Pennine region of Yorkshire, UK.

Time

It was taken on my way to work, at 07:00 am. I always take my camera gear with me and when I looked across the fields on this misty winter morning I was glad I did!

Lighting

The light was beautiful, diffused and softens by the low mist. But enough of the Sun was breaking through to create a warm glow. I had to shoot direct into the sunlight, so I bracketed my exposure and failed +1 into the exposure compensation.

Equipment

I didn't have my tripod with me so I used a fence to stabilise the camera. I have a Nikon D600 camera and a manual focus 28mm ais lens. No flash was used but I did use a grad filter to balance the exposure of the sky and foreground.

Inspiration

The area I live in is very beautiful and I always look out for opportunities like this. I live winter scenes above all else.

Editing

Yes, I weekend the colours to add some warmth.

In my camera bag

Nikon DSLR, monopoly, tripod, Nikon 50mm lens, 28mm prime + 70_300mm. However, my most significant investment to my photography is my Suzuki 4x4 car, which I recently bought. Before that I was limited to my mountain bike. I love having all my gear with me all the time and now I can go almost anywhere!

Feedback

Get up early, be obsessed with the weather. I use The Photographers Ephemeris for sunset and sunrise times and locations. It's a very useful app and also has lunar information. Always look out for good locations, make a mental note or take snapshots, with a mind to go back when the light is good. Never be afraid to fail, if your shots don't work out but you know the location is interesting try a different time of day. Plan your shoots but keep an eye out for other possibilities. Often the best shots are the ones taken speculative.
