Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Hauser Estate Winery during a family photography session in the grape fields.

Time

This image was taken late in the afternoon around the golden hour. I remember looking down the rows of grape vines and thinking that Sophia (pictured) would look amazing against the texture of the grape leaves. I setup slightly down hill to give her some height and offset to the side so that the parallel running lines gave the image some movement (rule of thirds). The pose was all Sophia I gave her very little prompting.

Lighting

This image was all natural light. It was cloudy that day but still with enough light to get a good overall exposure. If I remember correctly the light was coming in across from the right and I did not want any of Sophia in shadow.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D4 and a 24-70 MM Nikkor 2.8.

Inspiration

I knew once I saw the dress and Sophia's fantastic hair that I was looking for an old world look and feel. I was thinking that Sophia was perfect for this kind of image and that I was probably going to finish the image in post processing as black and white.

Editing

For this image I knew that Black and White or in this case monochrome with a touch of sepia would be the final edit for the image. I thought that would give the image the old world look. I imported to Light Room, used the NIK B&W plugin then finished the editing in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D4, Nikkor 28-70 MM 2.8, Nikkor 70-200 MM 2.8, D800 strobe, and occasionally a Nikkor 14-24 MM 2.8.

Feedback

In this case Sophia's mother knew the location and dressed according to the Old World theme for the shoot. All I had to do then was find the right place and time during the shoot to showcase this lovely little girl. I never rush, often letting the images develop as naturally as possible. I knew I was going to shoot in the rows so I shot these sequences in the middle of the shoot. I wanted to give myself some time to develop communication before we got to the prime locations.
