Really nice shot, I love the contrast of colours and the distinct black horizon. Great capture.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on our property in South Central Pennsylvania.

Time

The time of day was about noon, but there was an overhang where I was shooting so I was more in the shade while the butterfly on the butterfly bush was in the sun that was filtered through clouds

Lighting

Normally I would say to avoid the harsh light but this was a partly cloudy day and the light just seemed to be more gentle. I shot from full shade but didn't make any adjustments.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3100, and a Sigma 200-400 lens. I had to wait for the camera equipment to come to temperature from the air-conditioned structure to a warm exterior. Other than that, nothing else special.

Inspiration

I've always loved butterflies. Any time, any place, I'm always trying to get the perfect butterfly shot.

Editing

No post-processing.

In my camera bag

I love my Nikon D3100, and I generally carry two extra lenses, one for macro shots and my long lens. I keep a remote shutter release in the bag, and a tripod attached. Various camera cleaning equipment.

Feedback

Be patient, use a long lense as butterflies are easily scared.
