Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a local town beach, in the parking lot. It was pretty deserted as this is New England and it is chilly and crisp and gets dark early. Some of my favorite elements.

Time

I shot this around 5-6pm when the sun was setting and the colors were intense.

Lighting

I used available sun light only as I wanted to see what my new camera and it's accompanying lens could do. I shot in Raw mode to have the flexibility of changing the image to whatever I may imagine in the future and to better enhance the light that I was truly witnessing.

Equipment

I used a Canon T2i with its 18-55mm accompanying lens, handheld, no flash, brand new, out of the box.

Inspiration

I had just lost another camera and was mourning the loss of 1000 plus photos. I have lost many cameras and many photos over the years and always mourn them all. So when my sweet husband surprised me with a quick replacement I wanted to learn all about what unique capabilities it possessed and what I could do with them. I will shoot anything but I especially enjoy Portraiture. So I quickly enlisted a family member with a unique look and feel.

Editing

Yes. Prior to this photo I had not used editing programs, but was always intrigued. When I first opened up Photoshop Elements, I was slightly overwhelmed to say the least. I knew what I wanted to do but had no idea how to make it happen. A quick search on the app store brought Photoshop Touch to my iPad and wow, it was like a coloring book for me and every time I learn something new in Touch I know that there will be more expanded choices in Elements. In this photo I adjusted everything. Levels, colors, saturation, temperature, I used the dodge and burn tool and the patch tool everywhere I could, I used skin smoothing, softening and sharpening too. Now I can't imagine anyone seeing my SOOC images. I equate that to being naked and for my eyes only.

In my camera bag

A Canon 100mm Macro lens 1:2.8 good for portraits and bugs that the little always bring me. A Canon 55-250mm 1:4-5.6, a 24-105mm power zoom flash and a handful of memory cards. I also carry many filters, a habit from my SLR days, but I especially love and still use Neutral Density filters and Polarizers. And of course my 5 in 1 Reflector, not in the bag but always nearby.

Feedback

In my car I had a kit with extra hoodies, scarves, gloves, beanies and other change gear. I like to create one for every shoot. I also have a remedy kit that contains bobby ions, safety pins, needles, thread, scissors, sharpies and much more. When needed it is a life saver. I also have a professional makeup kit that in this instance I used to touch up her eyes and even out skin tone. I also had but did not use my portable lighting kit which consists of two light stands and four umbrellas. Two to diffuse and two to bounce. I may not always use these things but I like to imagine the possibilities.
