Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway in central Virginia at Raven's Roost. I was taking a motorcycle ride on the Parkway with camera on hand when I saw a great vantage point and decided to pull off the road and snap a few.

Time

This was taken at around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I was returning home when the view suddenly appeared on my left. It was warm and in the 70s. Perfect time in perfect weather, which made it a perfect opportunity!

Lighting

I couldn't have asked for better light. No tricks or tips for this shot -- the picture just took itself - there for the taking. The lighting was spot on.

Equipment

This was a Canon T3 with a 70-200 USM lens at 70mm. Shot right from the seat of my motorcycle.

Inspiration

Raven's Roost is a popular photographic subject, but I think I had a better vantage point than many others, in that I could pull my motorcycle off the road anywhere and not obstruct traffic. Also, from a motorcycle, you see so much more when you look around than one does in an automobile.

Editing

I may have done a little exposure adjustment in Lightroom, but other than that, this was a pretty straight shot.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon T3 and an assortment of lenses. A 70-200, stock 18-55mm, 28-90, and a 50-250. I'll keep an external flash with me, but I am the type of person who prefers using the ambient light. Natural light beats a flash almost every time if I can pull it off.

Feedback

I like to take the same route several times. It inspires me when just the right time of day, lighting and vantage point become clear to me. Also, taking the same photo in differing weather is great. It gives a lot of variety, and I often end up choosing a shot I never thought I'd love, when I put them side by side at final edit. It always falls together. If you have an eye for something, it is hard to go wrong with a capture. Other artists create beauty. I capture it.
