Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on holiday in Devon, when we had a day out at a zoo we found purely by accident. Lots of wonderful animals and things to see, including this beautiful bird that obliged me by posing more than once.

Time

This was taken mid afternoon, the sun had decided to go in leaving a semi bright blanket of cloud, creating some great light to shoot. I had the camera set to ISO 100, with a faster shutter speed due to the nature of the subject. I was incredibly pleased with the outcome.

Lighting

as mentioned before the cloud cover gave me a beautiful bright diffusion that gave me crisp clear shot

Equipment

I was totally winging it with my Nikon D3200, bought in Antigua. I needed the freedom to be able capture the subject matter in its glory free from tripods and other gear that could have got in the way.

Inspiration

I looked at this photo with the same appeal of a portrait. just because its an animal its still as marvellous as a portrait of loved one. The Emu is not the most pleasant of looking birds but it completely give you the idea that this Emu wanted to have its photo taken, so I did. And I thanked it afterward too. You just know sometimes when you get a real gem after pressing the shutter button.

Editing

No not on this photo, it wasn't needed. Pure and simple.

In my camera bag

I carry a simple set. Nikon D3200 body with Nikon DX nikkor 18-55mm a Nikon DX nikkor 55-300mm and Nikon nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 D prime lense. I have a few small filters that I can play around with for star bursts and colour, a remote for the shutter which I managed to stand on the other day..(not happy) a monopod a tripod spare battery, charger and cables for pc. oh yes and my Nikon sb700 flash for that added pizaz. I sometimes take my diffusion brolleys and lights if I know I will need them.

Feedback

As with anything, an element of luck is involved with being in the right place at the right time. Having decent equipment always helps, even though its just the mechanism for getting the picture. Having an idea in the first place of what it is that you want to achieve will always help. It can lead you in a different direction or get you something you never expected. Above all, never be disappointed or lose faith in your goal. It will happen. if not today, then another.
