Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the train station in my hometown of Tulcea, Romania. Somebody had started applying this stencil all over town, and I was intrigued by the contrast between the texture of the wall and the motif of the butterflies.

Time

It was a while before sunset, at the beginning of the Golden Hour, in late summer (mid August I think).

Lighting

I liked the way the parallel light rays emphasized the granular texture of the stucco on the wall, while at the same time making the butterflies "shine".

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D5100 with a 50mm f/1.8 D, so very basic equipment.

Inspiration

I was talking a walk alone through town and ended up at the train station, which is in a quite deserted part of town. There was no sign of life around but it struck me that someone had sprayed this on this cold, rough wall, so it immediately popped out and screamed "Take a photo!". The combination with the golden light also improved the appearance of the entire scene.

Editing

The image is only slightly improved by adjusting the contrast, luminosity, clarity and saturation.

In my camera bag

Since I am a beginner and don't have massive resources to invest in gear, I only shoot with a Nikon D610. I adore prime lenses, even though I only have a 50 f/1.8 G and a more interesting 20mm f/1.8 G, which is quite useful for the style of photography I practice (events, usually in crowded places with low light). I also use a 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 for getting those expressive portraits on the stage and I sometimes carry a remotely triggered Yongnuo 560 III, which I bounce off walls from close range.

Feedback

Look out for details that stand out from their environment and try to frame them as strongly as possible. Explore areas that are not so easily accessible and always look for new angles and compositions. Do not exaggerate with the post-production and try to use pleasing natural light as much as possible. Good luck!
