Behind The Lens

Location

I was sitting with my mother, in her yard in South Carolina, watching birds enjoying fresh seeds in the feeder.

Time

We were outside, mid-afternoon. I had just refilled the feeder and the birds didn't take long to find it.

Lighting

I let Mother Nature handle all my lighting needs for this shot. No flash, no filters, nothing but the camera lens between me and the bird.

Equipment

My only equipment at this time was my long-gone Sony with a 200mm lens.

Inspiration

Mother Nature herself inspired this. It was a favorite past time of my mother's and me to sit in her yard, soak up the sun and watch the birds. I talked to my mother, held the camera in my palm and snapped as the different birds came in to land on the feeders.

Editing

My post-processing of this photo consisted of downloading the photo, and cropping - just a bit. I had already used my zoom to capture the bird as closely as possible. I love how the trees blurred to yellow behind the close up of the little bird.

In my camera bag

Now that my life and photography have changed, I have one camera only and it fits in my pocket most of the time. It's a Canon Powershot, but that's not what I used to take this photo.

Feedback

Take as many photos as you can, because you never know which one will be "the one." I must have taken hundreds of photos of birds the day I took this one. Dozens of birds of all kinds were flying in and out of the feeder area. Some were on the ground, some waited in the tree and others darted in and out to snatch seeds and I tried to capture every one of them. Other photos that day might have been good, but I really like this one.
