Location
I took this photo in Melbourne in a small park near the beach in St Kilda.Time
It was around 5pm in November, I like to shoot around this time because there is still light but the sun is setting so the light is quite warm. It is also starting to cool down and people are more relaxed.Lighting
There was still plenty of natural light so we took the picture in the shade of a tree. The backround of the picture was very bright but I wanted to capture the soft light on her face. So I decided to raise the ISO to 1000 and close up tight on her face. This gave the effect I wanted.Equipment
I used my Cannon 6D with a 70 - 200mm 2.8 lens.Inspiration
This is one of a series of photos following the theme 'I lost my mind, I found myself in Melbourne'. I made the series with my friend and non-professional model Francesca. I chose her because she isn't a professional and nobody has ever worked with her before so she could realisticly look lost and not know what she was doing in front of a camera. Which is exactly what I wanted for the series. The reason her face is covered by her hair is because she is trying to protect herself from the outside world. But in doing that she opens her soul because she feels safe. I think you can really see it in her eyes.Editing
I used lightroom to increase the contrast and diminish the highlights, whites and blacks. I also increased the clarity. I did this to make everything more defined, and to leave the skin less contrasted in comparison to her eyes and hair.In my camera bag
Normally I have a Cannon 6D, an everday lens 28 -135mm 3.5 5.6. For special occasions I use 70 - 200mm 2.8. I also have a reflector that I use when I have someone assisting me.Feedback
Guide the model to emphasize the character that you want to portray. It's something that's only in your mind so you may need to tell them a story to get them in character. In this moment I told her: you're still lost but you are going to find yourself soon, look around and find yourself. What she achieved was something like a moment before relief. I think it really shows in the final product.
