Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in a tub at my home. It was an assignment for one of my photography classes.

Time

I wanted to create a portrait by submerging my subject in water and using soft lighting. I was unable to find a model for this assignment, so I brainstorm for an entire day to figure out how I was going to set up the light and tripod over me on the tub. It was around 8pm when I was able to start the project.

Lighting

I used a medium size soft box with continuous lighting. During that week my mother was in town so I had her help me by holding the light on top of me tilted to the left in order to create the highlights on the water.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 70D with a 18-135mm lens. A manfrotto tripod and one continuous light in a medium soft box.

Inspiration

Before I decided to go to school I was a soldier in the Army. My favorite color has always been pink, but during my time in the military my uniform was what I wore most of my time. For this assignment I wanted to create a soft and elegant using pink as my main color, and incorporating colorful flowers. Inspiration coming from fairy paintings that I found on Pinterest.

Editing

In order to get the look on this photograph I added a bit more magenta to it. I wanted to make the image warmer, it gives the image a more romantic mood.

In my camera bag

I always pack my Canon 5D Mark III with my 50mm lens. I love photographing with this lens because you can blur busy backgrounds and make the image more interesting. I also pack my Fujifilm Instax Mini 7s Instant Camera, for my crazy moments with family and friends. I enjoy having instant photos.

Feedback

Patient is a virtue and for these type of projects when it's only you, a lot of it is needed. Of course if you have help with you, they could always stand in for you while the camera is being set. I also try to rehearse my poses in front of a mirror before the shoots, it helps a lot and makes me feel more comfortable.
