Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Curitiba, a city in Brazil. They have a botanical garden and in it they have this greenhouse. This little waterfall is inside this greenghouse.

Time

As a matter of fact, it was noon! You can't tell it because it is inside this greenhouse, so the sun is kinda blocked by the greenhouse ceiling. There is this walkway around the greenhouse, so you can see the plants around, and in the middle of the walkway there is this little waterfall. When I saw it, I immediatly new I had to take the shot. The problem is that the space is very narrow. I had to ask people to stop for a while when I was taking the photo, because I had to mount my tripod behind the walkway, so the people was between me and the waterfall. As the place was pretty crouded, my wife had to block the way so I could take the picture.

Lighting

It was all natural. The greenhouse walls create a pretty soft light. All I had to do was drag the shutter to blur the water.

Equipment

I had a Nikon D7000 by that time, with the kit lens (18-105mm f/2.5-5.6). It was shot at 52mm, ISO 100, 2 sec exposure at f/29. I had to use such apperture because it was very bright, and I didn't have a ND filter with me. I had to use a tripod because of the exposure time.

Inspiration

Well, I was starting into photography and I wanted to try this technique. I had read about it before, and I'd seen many pictures like this (blurry water), so I had to try it. When I saw this waterfall, I immediatly realized this was the time to try it. But as I said, it wasn't easy, because the space was very narrow and there were many people walking around.

Editing

Well, first of all, I shoot RAW. So, all my photos have to be post processed in some way. But all I do, if necessary, are little tweekies in exposure (shadows, highlights, etc.), a little punch on the colors and sometimes I correct white balance. In this case, all I did was a little crop, because I didn't have much room to frame perfectly.

In my camera bag

Today I have a completly different equipment than at the time of this photo. Now, the bag I carry all around has a Nikon D750 with grip, a Nikon D610 with grip, a Nikkor 16-35mm F/4, a Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8, a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII (best lens ever!), a Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 macro, a Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 fisheye, a flash SB-910, a battery pack for the flash and a Yongnuo radio trigger. That's the least I carry everywhere I go.

Feedback

Well, first of all, be persistent. If I wasn't, I wouldn't have taken this photo. You see, the place where this waterfall is at is very narrow, crowded, the position I had to be to take the photo wasn't the best to be at, and so on. But I knew I had to persist and despite anything, I had to take this photo. Sometimes, we are lazy because it takes sometime to mount all the equipment, worried about other people looking at us, with our big cameras, tripod, etc., getting ready to take our photos, and it might intimidate us. Don't be! Forget about your sorrounding and just do your thing! You won't regret it in the future, when you'll have the chance to tell others how you did it, just like I am now!
