This was taken while my family and I were visiting Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast a few years ago.Time
I love this image and all it evokes. It was early morning and we were all excited to get to the local parade a little early so I could find a good vantage point to take photos of the parade. The whole town shows up so finding a good spot was imperative.Lighting
The lighting was pretty much mid-morning sun and luckily behind and to the side so as not to create any glare.Equipment
At the time, my camera was a Canon T2i with a Canon wide angle 10-22 lens, hand-held, no flash.Inspiration
A local parade, of course! Small towns across America have the best local parades and you never know what you might see! I positioned myself very close to the road for angle and much to my delight this vintage car was coming up and I could see a proud and smiling very elderly veteran inside. I could tell he was thrilled to be part of the festivities. Nostalgia for sure! Everything about this car and this old gentlemen made me smile.Editing
Yes, I did post-process this photo. At the time, I had Aperture on my MacBook Air so I did as much as I could to bring out the shadows and detail of the car and it's occupants. I used Photomatix software to tone map and I liked the results so that was all I had to do.In my camera bag
Today, I use a Canon 70D which is my main workhorse. I still use the T2i as a backup. I am a real estate photographer so the 70D works beautifully for me along with a Canon 10-22 lens. I usually keep a Tamron 18-270 lens inside my bag for "fluff" or filler photos when I am doing a virtual tour. It also comes in handy just in case I come across something fun to shoot while I am driving to or from my client's property. I also keep various filters in my bag, circular polarizers, graduated filters, neutral density filters and UV. At the moment I use a Canon Speedlite 430EX II for flash but am looking for a new one right now. I have a Manfrotto 290 tripod and wouldn't think of taking an interior shot or certain outside shots with it!Feedback
My advice would be to get to your location early and scout out the best vantage point. Keep an eye on changing light and adjust accordingly. Shoot RAW and don't be afraid to experiment with different settings on your camera. Get close and fill your frame with your subject. Most of all, have fun with it!
