This photograph was published Sept 2013 on the cover of Nat Geo Magazine Japan. I took it the morning after the American flag was raised to raise awareness as to the lack of effort by the GVNMNT during restoration efforts following the storm.
The star jet coaster fell into the ocean as the pier it sat on was destroyed by superstorm Sandy.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Seaside Heights NJ just after Superstorm Sandy had destroyed so many of the local beach towns

Time

This is a sunrise image

Lighting

The lighting was all natural, with a long exposure to soften the waves

Equipment

5D3 on tripod

Inspiration

I was inspired to document the effects of the storm and this image was taken the day after the American flag was raised on the coaster to highlight the lack of government help to the destroyed beach towns

Editing

Very little post was done to this image as I submitted it to Nat Geo for a front cover.

In my camera bag

I normally have a couple 5d's, a 7d, 70-200mm f2.8 mk2, 50mm f1.2, 17-40mm f4 and a 24-70mm f2.8 as my go to gear, along with a tripod, and a bunch of flash.

Feedback

Long exposures require clean (low) ISO and often ND filters can help. Tripod is essential and for sunrise or sunsets I often set WB to cloudy, to bring out the warmth.
