This particular photo was shot in Sicily, Italy 2012. The beautiful woman captured here is my 95 year old nonna (grandmother).Time
I captured this photo in early evening. My family and I were enjoying a large gathering with family friends at my grandmothers vineyard. What makes this photo very special to me is the fact that my grandmother rarely leaves her home, as she still cares for her special needs child who was 46 at the time. This is a testament to her strength and determination.Lighting
Sicily is known for its warm summer season. Mid day sun can be quite harsh, not the most ideal time for portraits. I decided to take this photo when the sun began to fall, giving a nice even light, without casting shadows on her very original face.Equipment
I typically use my DSLR while shooting, but I decided upon my little canon G9 for this particular evening because I wanted something that portable and light. The G series Canons are small but robust pieces of equipment. All the same creative controls are available to you as one would find in a DSLR. A great alternative for easy summer nights around food and drink.Inspiration
Every time I looked at my grandmothers strong features, I always thought to myself how I'd love to paint her portrait. I'm not much of a painter, but what I can do is photography. So i went with that. I wanted this photo to feel as though she was a part of the on-lookers life. I wanted to exhibit her strength and strong will. This woman has such a story that few will ever know. People will know now, when looking into her eyes.Editing
Clarity was added along with a touch of vignetting. I also decided to change the photo from colour to black and white. In my camera bag
I wish I could say that I have a plethora of equipment at my disposal at all times, but I don't. I shoot with my Canon 60d mostly. I have a 50mm 1.8 which I love. The cost of this little lens is minimal compared to the results that it can render if used properly. I never leave home without my Tamrom 70-300 vc. Again, a great lens at a great price. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a photographer on a budget. Wonderful images can still be captured without L-series lenses and top notch gear. Work with what you have.Feedback
The best advice that was given to me was "shoot what you feel, not only what you see". Especially when shooting portraits. Really try to exhibit an emotion, a feeling as opposed to something that is merely aesthetically pleasing. Get to know your subject and let them tell you there story. It will come if you remain patient. And most importantly-Fill your frame to really give a sense of intimacy. This will allow your photo to speak volumes.
