Location
This photograph was taken in my home photography studio, which at the time, was based in Modesto, California.Time
My photo studio is indoors and doesn’t have any natural light. The light is provided by my strobes. With this in mind, I can use my studio at any time, day or night, and achieve the same results.Lighting
I used strobe lighting; Speedotron 1200 power pack with two heads and an umbrella on each head.Equipment
For this photograph, I placed the kitten in a large light tent. In addition to this particular photo, at the same time, I was also taking photos of this kitten along with his sister. To keep the kitten contained, I decided to place them inside a light tent.Inspiration
My husband and I found two abandoned kittens in our yard. We left them outside, the first day/night that we found them because we were hoping that their mother would return. The following day, when the 2 kittens were still there alone and hungry, we decided to take them in. We hadn’t previously had the opportunity to photograph kittens this small, so on the second day in our home, I brought them into the studio, for some photos.Editing
I always shoot in RAW and process in photoshop. This photo was quite easy to process, as I always try to shoot the correct exposure. Really, the only thing that I had to do was get rid of the seam, which was in the background, from the light box.In my camera bag
I usually use a Nikon D750 with a 24-120mm Nikon lens, when photographing pets. I like using a zoom for this because animals can be unpredictable.Feedback
The ability to capture a kitten in a mug depends entirely on the willingness of the cat. MiuMiu, seen here, was very willing. He felt quite comfortable in the mug and he had no motivation to get out of it. His sister, Trixie, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with the mug. She was not cooperative at all!
