Location
I took this photo from one of the balconies of the Opera Garnier in Paris, France.Time
I took the photo in the late afternoon so the street would be busy with tourists, and I could get a nice crowd movement.Lighting
It was a sunny day in Paris which allowed me to take a lot of successive shots to make up this photo.Equipment
I shot handheld with a 5D mark ii and a 24-70 f/2.8.Inspiration
I had been trying to figure out a way to catch the movement of a crowd around a street performer, especially in Paris where you get a mix of tourists and onlookers, but also people in a hurry to get somewhere. This was one of my favorite attempts because I had a good crowd and a good vantage point.Editing
This involved a good amount of post. Being rather limited on equipment, I have no ND filters, so to remedy this I took around 30 shots of the crowd moving through the pianists performance. Afterwards I opened each of them as layers and played with the opacity of each until I got close to the "ghosts" effect I wanted. then a little bit of masking here and there, some adjustment layers and we have what you see here.In my camera bag
Usually in my daily gear is my 5d mark ii a 24-70 and a 70-200. Although recently having bought a sony a6000 I have been much more prone to taking that little guy around because its so much fun.Feedback
I think anyone who wants to get something similar should look for a crowd with people moving at different speeds and preferably some static, take a lot of shots, dont move too much, or if you have the luxury use an ND filter and a tripod! :)
