This is a room in the old Pfiefer Residence in Custer, ID. Now considered a mining ghost town, many of the buildings and artifacts from the late 1800's through the early 1900's are setup to show what life was like back then.Time
The photo was taken in the early afternoon.Lighting
There is one window in the room providing the natural lighting. The sky was overcast so the light was diffused. Luckily the window faced south so it still let in some direction light.Equipment
I kneeled down and was hand-holding my Nikon D3s fitting with a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8.Inspiration
The quality and direction of the natural light was the most inspiring part of this scene.Editing
I did some burning in Photoshop to deepen some shadows. In my camera bag
Nikon D3s, Nikon D300, Nikon lenses, 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm, all f2.8, Nikon SB900 and SB600, reflectors, and modifiers for the speedlights.Feedback
The right natural conditions are very helpful but you can't control that. For a shot like this I always bracket my photos anywhere from 3 to 5 stops depending on the intensity of the light and darkness of the shadows. It makes layering the images in Photoshop much easier for matching the way the image looked to my eyes.
