Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken up on Holwell Tor on Dartmoor, Devon, England. It was taken on my first ever visit so I was really lucky to get such good conditions.

Time

It was taken around 8:45 in the evening as the sun was beginning to set at the end of a warm summers day.

Lighting

The light in the summer months is not always the kindest to landscape photographers as it rises very early and when it gets overhead in the middle of the day the light can be very harsh and render a landscape featureless.

Equipment

This image was shot on a Canon 5D mkIII, 16-35mm 'L' Lens. The exposure time was 1/90th sec @ f16. A 2stop 'soft' ND Grad Filter was fitted to hold back the exposure in the sky. Tripod and cable release.

Inspiration

I have always wanted to visit Dartmoor as I love visiting remote places. I have seen pictures of this little tor before and liked how the rock formation and tree worked together.

Editing

I had to process the Raw file twice. Once for the highlights and once for the shadows then simply used a layer mask in photoshop to bring out the detail so it looked like the image I could actually see with my own eyes.

In my camera bag

In my bag I normally carry a spare DSLR body and approximately 3-4 lenses depending on where I am. I use a 16-35 f2.8 as my 'workhorse' lens for wide angle landscapes. A 24-70 f2.8 which is my intermediate lens, and a 100-400 f4.5 for the 'big' zoom shots. Along with these I have a set of ND Grad Filters, plus a polariser. Other important bits of equipment I carry are a sun position compass, various cleaning equipment and a good old bin liner for kneeling, lying or sitting on if required.

Feedback

With a location such as this it is best to research it first of all. I used an O.S. Map to find its location and work out roughly where the sun would be towards the end of day. Also, give yourself plenty of time to travel to and park up your vehicle at the nearest safe area and it is important to let someone know where you are if you are going alone. A beautiful location such as this is there to be enjoyed but it is just as important to stay safe.
