Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while on a safari in Botswana, Africa. We had been looking for lions and suddenly saw a family of lions lying in the grass and sitting up by a few trees. They got up and walked toward us as we got nearer.

Time

The warm winter sun was high above us and it must have been around noon, although I did not have a time device on me. We had been out for hourss.

Lighting

The lighting was the natural sun light filtered by a hood on the camera itself.

Equipment

The camera I was using at the time was a Canon with a 200 lens

Inspiration

Being inspired on a safari in Botswana, Africa was simple. Wake up and get out of the tent to the magic of the day was the basic ingredient I used. On this particular day, the small pride meandered toward us one at a time, almost like a parade. I kept watching this particular lion until I felt ready to snap the photo. I like the eyebrows on this lion.

Editing

In post processing, I merely balanced the lighting and cropped the image to bring out the expression of this lion

In my camera bag

Because I was in a vehicle, I could have a bag. This bag kept my camera from collecting dust so prevalent in the desert. I had extra batteries, a video camera and extra sim cards.

Feedback

Have an outside seat in your vehicle. Stop and wait. The animals will live their life around you. That's the magic in a safari.
