Location
I took this photo at the North Wall in Ballina NSW.Time
It was late afternoon as the sun had begun to set.Lighting
Since the sun was setting when I took this photo the whole scene was bathed in a soft warm light that I think really helped give this photo life.Equipment
I was using a Canon EOS 650D and Canon EF 100-400 F/4.5-5.6 L.Inspiration
I enjoy taking photos of birds because they are often so colourful and lead such different lives. On this particular day I was walking along the wall and this wren just landed on the lantana branch nearby as if to stop and smell the flowers and the scene was just to perfect to miss.Editing
Yes I do some post processing in lightroom but I typically keep the editing to a minimum. I like to make the image look like it did through my eyes, I corrected the colour a little and corrected for lens distortions as well as increasing the sharpness a little to get the fine feather details. In my camera bag
I normally shoot macro and wildlife but I also like to travel light. Most days I will carry the camera, the 100-400, 100mm macro, macro flash, spare memory cards and spare batteries. If I'm out all day I'll often bring a second camera and have each set up for their own use.Feedback
The best advice I can give is to study your subject, go out at various times and see if they are around and what they are doing. Try to shoot in the early morning or late afternoon when the shadows are soft, the light is diffused and the animals are most active. The last thing I can say is, keep the sun to your back if at all possible and wait for the subject to look at you or pose in an interesting way.
