Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a trip around the North of Scotland, I had travelled up through Sutherland and enjoyed the rugged and isolated landscape as I pursued my dreams of capturing the wonderful scenery. I stopped at the inlet to Loch Stack, where wandering around I came across the boat.

Time

the image was captured on a chilly November morning, I had been travelling around and stopped late morning to take the photos at the Loch, this one was shot around 11am. I managed to find my way around the loch and settle for lunch just after my outing to look over the length of the water and the spectacular hills beyond.

Lighting

the scene had caught my eye because of the effect that the sun peaking over the hills shed on the water and boat. the boat did appeal to me as a way to escape the hurly burly of life to a serene dream floating my cares away!. the sparkle and promise of a sunny day on the autumn colours was quite captivating.

Equipment

I had struggled round with my tripod and camera bag around the loch and the going was quite hard at time, however when I set eyes on this picture, I was so glad that I had carried my load and persevered to the location.

Inspiration

the scene was the ideal representation of a Highland dream for me, there were lovely strong autumn colours aside a suggestion of a getaway had me rooted to the location and impelled to take the photo. I had seen a range of landscapes as I travelled, but I loved the theme and the obvious link of the elements within the image.

Editing

I have taken the photo as a bracketed image and after some slight adjustment in the raw format, I processed this with Photomatix, allowing me to bring in teh foreground enhancements alongside the good colour and depth of the image.

In my camera bag

I had a Canon 60D with a 24-105mm lens. I have very little equipment, but I also carried a Slik tripod and UV filter.

Feedback

the key to this image has been the result of 3 elements; the sun and light, the autumn colours and the subject matter (boat), there had been a range of landscape options but I felt that the addition of the additional interest through the boat has made this stand out from the images that I have taken on the day
