Location
This photo was taken at Rowdy's grandfather's ranch. The property is several hundred acres and has a beautiful pond and gorgeous trees that grow over the road...which is where this photo was taken.Time
This photo was taken about 5:00 pm CST in a heavily shaded area. The beauty of it all was there were beautiful pockets of light in random places, which created amazing contrast for a black and white photo. Another factor in the 5:00 time slot was the position of the sun to the heavily wooded area...it was perfect!Lighting
Being that the lighting was filtered through all the leaves, I was presented with a great opportunity. Rowdy decided to sit in that particular area after walking about 25 yards. Leaves and mud...what's a better distraction for a one year old?! As you can see in the photo, the light was coming in from the right and filtered beautifully on to Rowdy as he sat and well...was just being a boy!Equipment
This photo was taken with my Canon 5D Mark III and my lens of choice was my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 USM IS II. No tripod or flash was used for this shot...I was laying, stomach down, on the muddy ground having a great time!Inspiration
I've always been intrigued by the rustic look of cowboy photos by some of the great photographers of our time. Capturing a moment when a child, or any person for that matter, is in their own world being the absolute best version of themselves is my ultimate goal as a photographer. I wanted to convey a mood...a story without the use of words.Editing
In processing this photo, I used Lightroom 5 to crop and straighten it before I finished it in photoshop CS6. In photoshop, I brought down the saturation and then tweaked with color filters, dodge and burned and finally ran it through NIK Silver Efex Pro 2 until I achieved the desired result. In my camera bag
My camera bag is becoming much more valuable than me! In my bag, I have...my amazing and reliable Canon 5D Mark III! Never leave home without it! Then my arsenal of glass consists of my all time favorite lens...85mm f/1.2 II!! What an amazing lens! The bokeh is unreal and if the focus is on...it's on! Then I have my 70-200mm f/2.8 USM IS II. That's one incredible lens...it's NEVER let me down, ever. Then I have my 24-70mm f/2.8 USM II...sharp as a tack!! Then of course I have that one remote trigger that no one every uses...I just have it, I don't know why.Feedback
If you're passionate about photography, you just have to shoot. And after you're done shooting...shoot some more! Learn your camera settings, learn your environment, know and understand lighting in any given situation. I'm convinced that the greatest shots ever taken have been by chance...they're usually never planned. Shoot, shoot, shoot! Find your style and sharpen those skills by asking questions, reading articles and studying photos from the greats. There are lots of amazing photographers who are willing to teach and pass on their knowledge to ambitious, passionate photographers. No passion, no great photos.
