Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo in Toledo, Spain on a day trip when I was studying abroad in the summer of 2014. I remember feeling like I had walked into a fairy tale!Time
This picture was taken in the early afternoon, at around 11 o'clock local time. We were on our way to a cafetería for some lunch and coffee.Lighting
In several other shots I took at this location, I was trying to capture the way the sunlight was filtering through the cloth draped over the streets. However, this shot that I took while the sun was behind some clouds came out much more vivid and drew the focus to less suspecting focal points, like the girl's blue backpack.Equipment
This was taken using a Nikon D810 with the standard lens and freehand (no tripod)Inspiration
I was inspired by how casually locals were walking streets that, to me, seemed magical. The space felt very alive, and beautiful, so I knew that it would do my work for me. I really just wanted to capture the perspective of the pedestrian in a way that permits the viewer to experience the space in their own way.Editing
Nope, this photo remains just how I snapped it!In my camera bag
Depending on what I'm planning on photographing, I sometimes bring my telephoto lens. Other than that, I usually just have an extra battery, SIM card, and my lens cap!Feedback
Go for a walk with your camera as often as possible! It doesn't matter where you are; becoming apart of the space around you, whether urban or rural, can allow you to capture things you might not have even set out for. I'm particularly fond of european walking towns (especially the well preserved ones, like Santillana del Mar, which is also in Spain), but even more urban environments from the streets of L.A. to San Jose, Costa Rica can provide amazing opportunities to capture the vibrancy and beauty of a city street.
