Behind The Lens

Location

At home in my bedroom. We had some very old curtains that we'd never replaced and Alex loved to sit behind them and look out the window.

Time

It was about 2 in the afternoon. I was walking through the bedroom and noticed his green eyes peering at me.

Lighting

The bedroom was really dark except for that one shaft of light from the opening where Alex watched me.

Equipment

Canon XTi and some patience. No flash.

Inspiration

I really loved Alex's sweet face spying on me with the light playing on the detail in the curtains. Alex has the most beautiful green eyes and the curtains were a dusky dark blue that just made him pop.

Editing

I darkened the photo slightly, enhanced the contrast and sharpened Alex's eyes and the curtain detail.

In my camera bag

I usually just carry my Canon Rebel XTi. It's about a decade old and is beginning to show it's age, but I've been so grateful for such a durable camera. It's been dropped, rained on, left in a hot car, left in the freezing cold and it's still working and taking beautiful pictures. When I get the chance to upgrade, I'm going to pass it on to my son.

Feedback

Be patient and notice the details in your environment. If I hadn't been paying attention, I never would've seen Alex looking at me. Always have love in your heart for your subject. It shows when you care about what you're photographing.
