This photo was taken on a walk around Moraine Lake in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. I am an amateur photographer and I crossed all my fingers these brilliant penetrating colors would be captured so I could enjoy the moment for years to come.Time
This is probably one of my favorite photos for its color and mood. At three in the afternoon June 2012 I was shooting several angles of this lake. My companion (a lover of all things blue) said she had now found her favorite color of blue. I agreed. The same for me. This shot captured the essence of the beauty of Lake Moraine. It is the best of my shots there.Lighting
The lighting seemed perfect at every angle from which we viewed the lake. The mountains were reflecting a different shadow of lighting at that time of day into the water on each side. This western shot aimed towards the east was the easiest to capture (and was the only path available safe from the wild bears!) and I felt it was the best also.Equipment
I used a Lumix by Panasonic DMC-TZ model. Not having a tripod with me a handy boulder served as a handy tripod.Inspiration
The scene was breathtaking, perhaps the moreso of any views I had seen around Lake Moraine. The vibrant colors along with the peaceful water with variation of vivid cerulean blue to royal blue to aqua, jagged cliffs and snow in the distance yet clean, fresh pines in the front with sharp boulders having emerged from winter spoke to me of life and beauty erupting in glorious color and majesty wherever you looked - into whichever of the two seasons it appeared to be. It did not need it except for the fact that the depth of color did not quite come through. Therefore I saturated the color a smidgen and voila. It appears true to nature.In my camera bag
For guaranteed quick shots of "just popped up" scenes I always have my Lumix Panasonic DZN-TZ80. For set-up shots or higher quality in in zoom, motion and sports as well as portraits I carry my Nikon 3300 with the VR Nikon DX 18-55 mm lense as well as the 75-250 mm zoom by Vivitar, Some UV filters, dust cloths and I am off.Feedback
Keep your eyes open to beauty. Try different angles. If unsure use the Auto focus and post-edit. Include as much of the scene as possible with a good focus on the principle point and where you want it to be in the photo. You can always crop. Use a good light - not high noon. Don't aim east in early morning - just basics. Remember the magic hour in the part of the world or country where you are. And if you are an amateur like I am, don't worry. Shoot a lot with different cameras. You will learn and can always find another interesting subject to capture. "Feel" the shot in your hands and eyes and breath. You will capture it.
