Behind The Lens

Location

Simple spaces are all I shoot in these days, I try to make simple spaces look more interesting with use of angles and editing. This was shot in a master bathroom of a home I like to use for shoots. It is nothing special, just a simple shower and tub. You do not need to spend millions to make a shot look like more than it is, that is what photography is all about. Creating interest where others would never think it to be.

Time

Taken mid day. No need to worry about the sun as I create my own light and thus am in control if the results more. Studio strobes and imagination.

Lighting

For "studio" or on location work like this I keep it simple. Most of my work is done with one inexpensive Alien Bees or White Lighting strobe and a very large 44" or larger umbrella. Umbrellas do very cool things with light. Everyone should try it.

Equipment

Nikon D100, 70-200 lens if I recall properly. I was literally in the other room when i shot this, but long lenses make glamour work like this take on a totally different feel.

Inspiration

Well that is actually simple, the model inspired me to do the shoot and in turn we both got some great shots out of it.

Editing

YES - I post process everything. My job is to make non professional models look like something they never thought they would look like. My workflow uses Lightroom and Photoshop, various filters and presets. That said most are created by me or tweaked by me to not just look like a canned / edited image.

In my camera bag

I keep it simple, 3 lenses, and 2 bodies, but I rarely if ever use more than a lens or two on a shoot. 85mm F1.4 - 70-200 Nikon AFS and I have the 12-24mm Wide angle but that is really reserved for Landscape work.

Feedback

Patience, the will to learn and the ability to separate shoots like this with sexy subject matter into "WORK" and not into a way to find a date. My best clients have had multiple run in with creepy photographers. Be Professional, know what you want to get out of the shoot, explain that to your model and work as a team to get the results you are both looking for.... if you do that you can easily make great images that both you and your model will love.
