Location
This photo was taken in Dubai during an international Sky Diving event. At the time this was taken I was living and working in Dubai and the event was taking place in a venue close to where I lived. Needless to say that the UAE is great at promoting its genuine culture and traditions and the setting surrounding the event displayed all that. They put on an exhibition showing local people in their natural livelihood. This elderly man was part of all that.Time
This was taken on a late afternoon while the sun was still high in the sky. It was a clear daylight and no clouds in the sky. A pretty normal day in Dubai so to say. Ad in most cases, the air gets smudged with moisture from the ocean mixed with and fine sand dust, which makes the light hazy in a lot of days during a season. This was not he case though.Lighting
All natural light (daylight) and the sun was about an hour before setting down. The light was coming from his left side casting a soft light on one side. The setting was in an outdoor open space in perfect weather conditions, it was one of these days. This was in the month of November, which weather-wise is considered to be most light-perfect month of the year in Dubai.Equipment
I used my newly acquired camera back then, a Canon 5D Mark II with a 28-135mm f1:3.5-5.6 IS lens attached to it. Handheld and no reflectors nor strobes/speedlights on aperture priority at f5.6.Inspiration
I'm interested in people in general and specifically in finding unique personalities with charismatic appeal, and that drives my motivation to capture the uniqueness in people. Also, it's not very often you get the chance to meet with locals in the UAE. So this was a clear opportunity not to be missed out in my view, to take a photo of an elderly man with ethnic attire and accessories in his natural environment without being styled by outside party. Clearly a unique opportunity here.Editing
Aside from a few minor color corrections, very minor dodge & burn of highlights and shadow before converting the image to black & white. I also enhanced the eyes making the white pop up a notch. That's it.In my camera bag
My canon 5d Mark II, which I'll soon upgrade to the newly released 5D MIV, a prime lens Sigma 50mm f1:1.4 Art, Canon 24-70mm f1:2.8L II, Canon 16-35mm f1:2.8L II, Canon 70-200mm f1:2.8L II, Canon Speed light 580xII. Benro Tripod.Feedback
Try to be 'there' to see, discover, and capture a unique image that will last for ever without imitating what others do. Rather trust the feeling inside you and go with your idea. Be nice to people.
