Allhallowtide, Hallowtide, Allsaintstide, or the Hallowmas season, also known as the Triduum of All Hallows (Triduum of All Saints),is the encompassing the Western Christian observances of All Hallows' Eve (Hallowe'en), All Saints' Day (All Hallows') and All Souls' Day, which last from October 31 to November 2 annually. Allhallowtide is a time to remember the dead, including martyrs, saints, and all faithful departed Christians.
The present date of Hallowmas (All Saints' Day) and thus also of its vigil (Hallowe'en) was established for Rome perhaps by Pope Gregory III (731-741) and was made of obligation throughout the Frankish Empire by Louis the Pious in 835.Elsewhere, other dates were observed even later, with the date in Ireland being 20 April. It was only in the early 11th century that the modern date of All Souls' Day was popularized, after Abbot Odilo established it as a day for the monks of Cluny and associated monasteries to pray for the dead.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my home studio in Sydney Australia.

Time

This shot was taken at night around 10.30 pm after I experimented several times with the screen shot displayed in front of the skull.

Lighting

This was a "Halloween Shot" so I wanted it to grab your attention, and to be a bit scary. The highlights on the skull's teeth were achieved with a small LED torch, the rest of the illumination was supplied by the screen on my iMac.

Equipment

Camera: Sony A7r Lens: 50 mm Minolta alpha mount f1.4 Aperture: F16 ISO: 1600 Exposure :1 second Tripod: Exposure Compensation: -1 EV

Inspiration

The Halloween Contest on ViewBug started the process of creation and I knew I wanted to use the glass skull, the rest was a trial by error process.

Editing

I shot this in hi contrast Black and White in the Sony A7r.

In my camera bag

It really depends on the "Mission". I use 4 digital cameras: Sony RX100, Sony A7r, Panasonic Lumix GH1, Pentax Q. I have a large collection of manual focus vintage glass which I use with adapters on the above cameras ranging from 35 mm SLR lenses to 16mm and 8 Mm Cine lenses. They range from 20mm to 500 mm on the Sony a7R 7 to 140 mm on the Micro 4/3, plus adapters for the above mentioned lenses.

Feedback

During the "creative "process go with the flow and let your inspiration lead, and don't give up if you don't get it right at first, stand back let your subconscious work it out. Try not to be too analytical or technical. This comes later.
