Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Arcadia Beach on the Oregon Coast. I had just recently bought my camera and was excited to try it out on the sunset. What better place to view the sunset than at the beach?

Time

I had been at the beach for a few hours, waiting for the sun to set. It was warm and there were a lot of clouds so I knew it was going to be beautiful. Once the sun started to go down and the clouds changed colors, I started snapping pictures.

Lighting

I wasn't really paying attention to the lighting at first. I started at one end of the beach and moved my way down snapping as many pictures as possible using every angle I could think of. Once I noticed the placement of the sun, however, and saw the reflection of the clouds on the sand and the darkness of the rocks in the background, I knew I had it.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Canon EOS Rebel T3i, using an 18-55 mm lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I love taking pictures at the beach, particularly as the sun sets, and I also love capturing reflections. I was with my brother who is also a photographer and he was coaching me on certain angles to use and where I should point my lens. I got to this point where my two favorite things came together; the sun was perfect and I could see the reflection of the clouds on the sand.

Editing

I didn't do any post-processing, actually, I just load the photos onto my computer and pick my favorites. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

In my camera bag

Since I'm just starting out as a photographer I don't have a lot of equipment. I have my camera body, and two lenses: an 18-55 mm lens and a 75-300 mm lens, everything Canon.

Feedback

Honestly, the best advice I can give is to just shoot. Shoot as many pictures as you can. Look at the ground and its relationship with the sky, what's to the left and right, and observe through the lens before taking the picture. Once you like what you see, snap as many photos as you can! You are bound to get the one you want!
